All About Avalon
Ron Moore’s Dive Catalina is situated on Santa Catalina Island; Avalon is the only city on Catalina Island and the California Channel Island and is also the southernmost city in Los Angeles County. The waterfront is teeming with tourism-oriented businesses and a wide array of resort communities. Located near the easterly portion of Catalina Island, Avalon is 22 miles off the coast of Southern California and sees over one million visitors annually.
Avalon is known for its strong environmental protection philosophy and vibrant model community, which is based on sustainable principles and its tourist-based economy. The island is just over 76 square miles in area; 85% of the island is home to an open space conservancy! Some of the most popular activities to do on Catalina Island are diving and scuba diving, so it’s no wonder why it’s such a popular destination!
Catalina Island Diving
Catalina Island is 22 miles off the coast of Southern California; one of the biggest questions we get asked is: “what’s the best way to get to Ron Moore’s Dive Catalina and Catalina Island?” To answer this question, you can take a ferry ride from one of the four mainland ports in Southern California (San Pedro, Newport Beach, Long Beach, or Dana Point) or take a helicopter ride from Long Beach, Burbank or John Wayne Airport, or San Pedro. The rides for ferries take about an hour and helicopter rides take about 15 minutes (please note rules for flying after scuba diving). If you own a private aircraft or boat, we recommend this option.
From the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce website: “Catalina Island is a picture perfect paradise and a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the mainland just 22 miles away. The air is refreshing, the water is clear, the community is casual and friendly, and there’s not one traffic light on the whole island. From the city of Avalon to the rustic village of Two Harbors, experience the island for yourself – explore the rugged back country where the bison roam, enjoy the most stylish in dining experiences, conquer the rush of thrilling adventures, and relax on the sand with the gentle rhythm of the ocean”.
Sounds good doesn’t it? Catalina Island is a premier dive destination that is known for its beautiful underwater wildlife, kelp forests, and reefs.
